A wireless link is defined as any system that allows data transfer between two or more points that are not physically connected. This is done through electromagnetic waves, which can be transmitted over long distances without requiring direct line-of-sight between devices. 

It can be used for anything from transferring money to sending messages. It’s an integral part of our everyday lives and can be used in various applications. When you use your phone or laptop on the go, you’re likely using a wireless link.

Wireless links are an integral part of wireless networks. A network requires a sender (access point) and a receiver (end device) for a network to work. The access point provides access to the network which is being used. The following three are the mainly used types of wireless links.

Terrestrial Microwave

Terrestrial microwave communication is the most reliable and widely used wireless communication technology. It provides high-speed and secure communications. With terrestrial microwaves, there are no line-of-sight issues to worry about. Terrestrial microwaves are in the low gigahertz range, and the relay stations are placed at around the distance of 48 km.

Communications Satellites

Satellites are used for many purposes like television, telephone calls, radio broadcasting, and internet access. These systems orbit the Earth at an altitude of 35,400 km (22,000 mi). The satellite receives a signal from one point on the Earth's surface and transmits it back down to another point on the ground. 

This is called an "uplink." The satellite then sends this information back up to space, where it is received by other satellites or ground stations that relay the information across the world.

Radio & Spread Spectrum 

Wireless LANs use spread spectrum technology to enable communication between multiple devices in a limited area. IEEE 802.11 defines a common flavor of open-standards wireless radio-wave technology known as Wi-Fi. This means that any device with the right hardware can connect to your network.
